With a tattoo like that, I'd stay with him whatever he did. (And yes high contrast does bring out tattoos well, though when I did it it made skin look orange and artificial; how'd you get around that?

Contrast is good for showing up tattoos for sure, but like you say it does usually turn the skin orange so you need to colour balance
it out a bit, try adding more blue and less yellow and see how that looks, that's what I did here.
